* * *

Sasha crouched in the bushes downwind of the clearing. The cold night air crept under his skin, and the dirt and leaves soaked into the fur on his belly. He tried not to think about all the worms and slugs down there as well. They bristled with the magic under the earth.

Kamil and Maxim were both more than willing to do what Sasha suggested. He’d ruminated on it for the last few days, ever since Brano caught them in the alcove and did a royal number on Maxim during practice.

Maxim didn’t say a word about it, but Sasha had watched the whole thing. He heard what Brano said, and felt it gnaw on Maxim. Life was going to get more dangerous for the both of them unless they stepped up and stopped it.

And there was only one way to really stop it.

They had to force Roland’s revolt into action.

The three wolves retreated to a wooded hill, higher than the rest.

Sasha knew the place well. He went out there to practice his magic when he was still a simple omega no one in the castle might miss. It was perfect for what they needed – surrounded by trees with a sharp cliff at the far end. The fall wasn’t far, perhaps ten meters, but the bottom was lined with jagged rocks. Enough to kill a wolf.

Sasha watched as they slipped away from the group, and sure enough, Brano sneaked after them. That’s what Sasha figured would happen. If hired hunters couldn’t do the job, Drahoslav would send his best man to finish it.

Then Kamil and Sasha broke off, pretending to leave Maxim alone while they tucked into their hiding places.

At the moment, Maxim wandered around the clearing, sniffing the ground as if he were hunting for a boar.

Kamil was on the other side of Sasha in his own bush.

All they had to do was wait for Brano and hope the bastard came alone.

Then something rustled upwind. Paws crunched through the underbrush. Brano’s distinct musk met Sasha’s nose, and the fur rose on Maxim’s back.

No other wolves accompanied him.

Like Sasha expected, Drahoslav didn’t want shifters he couldn’t trust trying to kill the prince. They might talk. Brano wouldn’t.

Maxim raised his head. He wasn’t quite fully grown yet – that would take another couple of years – but he was large enough. Definitely an alpha.

However, Brano wasn’t small. He was broad-shouldered with powerful paws. His lips curled up into a snarl. The intent was obvious – a fight to the death.

Only, Brano didn’t know two wolves hid in wait.

Maxim pressed his ears to his head, and bunched his shoulders. The fur stood on end, which made him appear larger. He growled, a low grumble that vibrated inside Sasha’s chest.

Then Brano charged.

Teeth snagged at Maxim’s flank, and he bucked to throw Brano off.

The pain of those fangs bit into Sasha’s thigh. He swallowed a whimper, and threw a look at Kamil. It had to be perfect or it wouldn’t work. Which meant they couldn’t charge out and fight head on, and Sasha couldn’t use his magic.
